The Run of Their Lives

By | Oct 16, 2007

The Colorado Rockies are on one of those runs that comes once in a lifetime.  Unfortunately there are a lot of people who may not really be aware of it.

Their run has included winning 13 of 14 games to close out the season.  This amazing feat included winning two out of three in the final season series against the Western Division leading Arizona Diamondbacks.  And they needed everyone of these wins, since even with them they ended the season tied with the San Diego Padres for the Wild Card spot.

They won a the one game playoff against the Padres giving them a spot in the National league playoffs.

They won the 1st playoff series, a best 3 out of 5, with three straight wins against the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Phillies also had an amazing run to win their division having been 7 games behind with 16 left to play.  The Rockies’ first two wins against the Phillies were in Philadelphia.

Then it was on to the League Champion Series against the Diamondbacks.  The Diamondbacks had won their first series also in three games.  This is the same Diamondbacks that were the last team to beat them in nearly 4 weeks.

They handed the Diamondbacks 4 straight defeats, the first two of these were in Arizona.  The Rockies became the first team since the league playoffs expanded to two series to win all 7 games to win the pennant.

But as I said many people may not even know it.  This year all of the National League playoff games have been televised on cable.  Those who only have off the air programming were not able to watch any of the National League games and only the championship series of the American League.

Not only that, but most of the Rockies games, including all of the championship series  began at 10:15 Eastern Time.  Many of the east coast didn’t stay up to watch the whole game and the games may have ended to late to appear in the morning papers.

The Colorado Rockies are going to the World Series with one of the most amazing runs in baseball history.  One that may not be a thing of legend.  The still have to win 4 games, and won’t play another game for over a week. If they don’t win the amazing run will only become a footnote.

In a lot of ways this is like the Miracle Mets of 1969.  They won when they weren’t suppose to coming from an amazing run.  But would it have been remembered  and honored had the heavy favorite Baltimore Orioles had won the series.  Probably not.

Go Rockies.
