The Game of the Century?

By | Nov 5, 2007

For some the New England-Indianapolis game has been called the game of the century. One network even called it Super Bowl 42 1/2. Many times when a game has this much hype before it’s played it turns out to be a dud.

This game sure didn’t turn out to be a dud. Whether the team you were routing for won or not. Everyone will admit it was exciting. Well up until the last 2 minutes.

But can this game be called ‘The Game of the Century’?

For one thing, it’s only 2007 and to place this game as the Game of the Century is reaching just a little. Sure it’s an important game. It’s was against two teams who where undefeated with either of them having a realistic chance of going through the regular season undefeated. But it is a regular season game. Nothing was really on the line with 7 or 8 games still remaining (depending on the team). A lost is just a lost.

New England won in amazing fashion. How many people thought it was over when Indianapolis took the 20-10 lead with 10 minutes to play? I know I did. But does this ruin Indianapolis’s season? No.

In all probability these two teams will play once again before the Super Bowl. This game may have determined who gets home field advantage for that game. But as New England has shown they can win in Indianapolis. And last year Indianapolis won two games on the road in their march to the Super Bowl. Both games in which they were the underdogs simply becuase they were the road team.

There’s still a lot of football to play between now and the Super Bowl. How many more ‘Games of the Century’ will be played between now and then?

For some that game may be today when Baltimore plays Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football.
