Who Should be at the Game?

By Steven G. Atkinson | May 23, 2007

Barry Bonds needs 10 more home runs to tie Hank Aaron’s career mark of 755.  Lately there’s been a lot of talk about who should be at the game when it is hit.

Let’s first look at Aaron.  He has said that he has not intention on being at the game, even if it doesn’t happen until the Giants play in Atlanta.  People are critical of this decision.  Do they have that right?

It doesn’t really matter whether Aaron decides not to attend the game because he doesn’t feel Bonds deserves it or he just doesn’t want to go.  It is his decision and his decision alone.

There is no way to tell when the game will come, Bonds could sit at 754 for 10 or more games.  He could could come out in the first game after hitting 753 and hit 3. To be certain that anyone will be at the game, one would pretty much have to follow Bonds to every game after he hits 750.

Let the man alone.  He put up with enough hassles when he was chasing Ruth.

Should Bud Selig, the current baseball commissioner be there?  Sure, but at the same time do you think it’s fair to the rest of baseball if he follows the Giants for a number of games until the magic hit.

How about any of the former baseball commissioners?  They can be there if they want, but not one should think one way or another if they don’t attend.

There really is only one person who needs to be at the game. That’s Barry Bonds.  Anyone else will simply have the pleasure of the experience.  If he’s not there to hit it, no one else will do it for him.
