The story is amazing. A few weeks ago the New York Mets stood at the top of the National League East looking as if they were ready to move into the playoff. Now they are not alone at the top. Last night the Phillies, who at the beginning of the year looked as if they were in for a long year, moved into a tie with the mets for the Division lead.
The Phillies won against the Atlanta Braves while the Mets lost to last years champions, St Louis Cardinals.
On September 12th and with only 17 games remaining to play the Mets were 7 games in front. Since then they have lost 10 of the 14 games they played with three remaining against the Florida Marlins. In Major league history no team has failed to finish first after having at least a seven-game lead with 17 to play. This would be the worst end of the season failure. Even worst than the 1969 Chicago Cubs and the Philly team from the early 60′s.
And this is not the only National League race to the playoffs. With three games to go, none of the National League teams have a place in the playoffs. In the Central the Cubs have the biggest lead at 2 games over the Brewers. In the West the Diamondbacks have a game lead over the Padres and 2 over the Rockies. The Wild Card has the Padres leading by one over three other teams.
It’s going to be a fun weekend for baseball fans.
