Movie is Not as Good as the Book

By Steven G. Atkinson | Aug 3, 2009

Generally speaking the statement, “The movie is not as good as the book” is true. This past weekend I had the chance to see the movie Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and having reread the book in the past few weeks there is no doubt that the movie is not as good as the book.

But this does not make it a bad movie. In my view it is perhaps the best movie of the 6.

There are many things that are in the book, that are not in the movie. This has been true in each of the movies and at least this time the movie makers knew what will be happening in the final book and what may be needed and not needed for the final movie(s).

There are also a few changes. Again this has been true for all of the movies. While I understand the reasoning for one of the changes (sorry I will not say what it is to prevent spoilers) for me it just doesn’t fit since it relates to a part of the final book that means another change or having an entire Harry adventure removed. I suppose we will just have to see how it’ll be incorporated when the next movie is released next July.

There are some character developments that I would have focused on less and other elements of the story that were left should have been included.

I suppose most of the outcries that the movie changes or eliminates too many things comes from those fans who really wanted the series to be recreated for the screen chapter by chapter and word for word.

In a story, in a universe similar to Harry Potter’s, there are things that an imagination can create while movie magic, even in today’s advance movie making, will never be able to create on the screen.
