Is a Blogger a Journalist?

By Steven G. Atkinson | Jun 22, 2007

I’ve recently heard something, I have to say it was in passing and I haven’t look into it, that  some bloggers have requested press passes at some events and been turned down.  That’s where the title of this post originates.

While there probably are many people writing blogs, some of them professional journalists, there are even more who are doing it for the fun or it.  Even some just to try to make a name.

Where does blogging change from a hobby to a profession?  That’s a very good question and one that I’m not sure anyone really has an answer.  Or maybe we can you this, When you earn more through your blogs than your expenses, it’s a little more than a hobby.

Do I consider myself a journalist?  I am a technology consultant by training and I write when I have the time and desire.

Would I like to be a journalist?  I suppose if enough people enjoy reading my thoughts and comments and someone wants to pay me for them, the answer would be yes.

But I also am realistic enough to know and understand when something is a hobby and when it’s a profession.  And I won’t try to attend events asking for Press passes until such time that my hobby becomes my profession.
